When You Need Letters and Numbers Only

Legacy Systems

Older databases and authentication systems built before symbol support was standard often restrict passwords to letters and numbers to avoid encoding or storage issues.

Form Validation Rules

Some web forms explicitly reject symbols to simplify input validation, even though this weakens the maximum achievable password strength.

Compensate With Length

Without symbols, the character pool drops from ~94 to 62 characters. Adding a few extra characters to the length fully compensates for the lost entropy per character.

Frequently Asked Questions

Legacy databases, older authentication systems, and some form validation rules restrict input to letters and numbers — usually to avoid encoding issues or because they predate widespread symbol support. It's a system limitation, not a security recommendation.

Slightly, at the same length — a 62-character pool gives about 5.95 bits per character versus ~6.55 bits with symbols. The gap is modest; adding a couple of extra characters to the length more than compensates.

16 characters is a solid default — roughly 95 bits of entropy, comfortably "Very Strong" even without symbols.
