Home Network Security Checklist

  1. Change default router admin credentials — the #1 attack vector for home networks
  2. Use WPA3 or WPA2-AES — never WEP or WPA-TKIP
  3. Set a strong WiFi password (you're here!)
  4. Disable WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) — it has known brute-force vulnerabilities
  5. Update router firmware — patches known vulnerabilities
  6. Create a guest network — isolates visitors from your main devices
  7. Hide your SSID (optional) — not true security, but reduces casual discovery

WPA2 vs. WPA3 Comparison

Even with WPA3, a strong password matters. For the strongest possible WiFi security, use our WPA Key Generator for a full 63-character key.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good WiFi password?

A strong WiFi password should be at least 12 characters with mixed character types. Since you only enter it once per device, prioritize length and randomness over memorability. Our generator creates WPA2/WPA3-compliant passwords.

WPA2 vs WPA3 — which should I use?

Use WPA3 if all your devices support it — it provides stronger encryption (SAE/Dragonfly handshake) and protects against offline dictionary attacks. If any device doesn't support WPA3, use WPA2-AES (never WPA2-TKIP, which is deprecated).

Should I change my default router password?

Absolutely, and immediately. Default router passwords (often printed on the device) are catalogued in public databases. Attackers within WiFi range can look up your router model and try the default credentials. Change both the WiFi password AND the admin login password.

How long can a WiFi password be?

WPA2-Personal supports passwords from 8 to 63 characters. We recommend 16-20 characters for a strong balance of security and ease of entry. For maximum security, use a 63-character WPA key.

What is the QR code for?

The WiFi QR string can be converted to a QR code that guests scan to connect automatically — no typing needed. Use any QR code generator to create the image, then print it on a card near your router.
