How the WiFi QR Format Works

Standardised Format

The WiFi QR format is an open standard: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;;. The T field specifies security type (WPA covers WPA2 and WPA3), S is the SSID, P is the passphrase.

Native OS Support

iOS 11+ and Android 10+ camera apps parse this format natively — no app installation required. When a camera sees the QR, the phone displays a "Join Network" notification.

Generated in Your Browser

The QR code is rendered on an HTML5 canvas using QRCode.js. Your SSID and password are encoded locally — they are never sent to any server. The PNG download is also created locally.

Treat Like Your Password

The QR code encodes your WiFi password. Don't post it publicly online. For guests, print it and keep it in a location accessible only to people you trust — or generate a separate QR code for a guest network.

Frequently Asked Questions

A WiFi QR code encodes your network credentials in a standardised text format: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;;. When a smartphone's camera app or QR reader scans this code, the operating system automatically parses the credentials and prompts the user to join the network — no manual password entry required. This format is supported natively on iOS 11+ and Android 10+.

Yes. All QR code generation happens in your browser — your SSID, password, and the generated QR image are never sent to our servers. You can verify this by watching the Network tab in browser DevTools while clicking "Generate" — no requests are made. The PNG download is also created locally using the canvas API.

iPhone (iOS 11+) and Android (10+) support WiFi QR codes natively in their camera apps. Older Android devices can use a QR scanner app. Windows 10/11 Camera also supports this format. Smart TVs, printers, and most IoT devices do not support WiFi QR codes and must have the password entered manually.

Yes. Click "Download PNG" to save a high-quality PNG with a white border — ready to print. You can tape it near your router, put it in a picture frame, or include it on a guest information card. The downloaded PNG is 256×256 pixels with 24px padding, suitable for small print sizes.

Select "WEP" in the security type dropdown — this generates a QR code with T:WEP in the format string. However, note that WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is a broken, deprecated protocol that can be cracked in minutes with freely available tools. We strongly recommend upgrading your router to WPA2 or WPA3. Any router manufactured after 2006 should support WPA2.
